The buzz for Nelly Furtado's Loose began before the music was even recorded, with the announcement that legendary hip-hop knob-twirler Timbaland (Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake) would act as co-producer. The question on fans' minds: what would it sound like when a hip-hop kingpin collaborated with an artist who culls inspiration not just from pop music, but also her own Portuguese roots?
As it turns out, Loose incorporates a number of different styles along its journey, but is--surprisingly--primarily divided between '80s-influenced electronica and latin-infused pop. This disc is very different from Furtado's previous CDs, a fact immediately evident from track one, the new wave-affected "Afraid." A strong opener, the song is the beginning of a 1-2-3 punch of uptempo, infectious dance floor beats. The second cut, "Maneater," also proves to be incredibly catchy, but the verses and keyboard sound too much like they were plucked from electroclash artist Peaches' tree, and originality is lost. The perfect summer pop song follows, the massive hit "Promiscuous," which features clever interplay between Furtado and Timbaland on their sassy duet. From that point, Loose oscillates between the Miami-affected sounds of R&B, Latino pop, and reggaeton ("Showtime," "Te Busque," and "No Hay Igual" respectively) and the aforementioned '80s vibe ("Glow," "Do It"). Fans will hear Furtado at her vocal best on "Say It Right" and "In God’s Hands"--two of the most lyrically compelling tracks on the disc.

Als Peter Legat 1994 mit seiner Band Count Basic die Acid-Jazz-Szene stürmte, wurde dieses Genre noch eindeutig von britischen Bands wie Incognito und Galliano dominiert. So war es auch nur verständlich, daß der in Wien ansässige Gitarrist und Songwriter zur Produktion des Count-Basic-Debütalbums "Life Think It Over" nach London ging und dort mit einigen der Besten aus dem Umfeld der vorgenannten Acid-Jazz-Vorreiter zusammenarbeitete. Schon das erste Count-Basic-Album enthielt einige Songs, die sich in Österreich, Japan, Italien, Frankreich und sogar den USA zu veritablen Hits mauserten und die Charts eroberten. Anteil an diesem Erfolg hatte nicht zuletzt die stimmgewaltige Sängerin Kelli Sae, die zuvor unter anderem schon der Funk-Band Defunkt vorstand , bei den alternativen HipHoppern von Arrested Development und später vorübergehend auch bei Incognito mitsingen sollte.Seit dem Debüt sind nunmehr dreizehn Jahre verstrichen, in denen das Acid-Jazz-Fieber längst verflogen ist. Da ist es dann vielleicht an der Zeit, die Dinge endlich einmal bei ihrem eigentlichen Namen zu nennen: Denn die Musik, die einst trendy als Acid-Jazz etikettiert wurde, war im Prinzip nie etwas anderes als eine zeitgenössische Mixtur aus Rhythm'n'Blues, Funk, Soul, Jazz, Latin und Pop. Auf ihrem nunmehr fünften Studioalbum "Love & Light" zeigen Peter Legat, Kelli Sae und das elfköpfige Count-Basic-Ensemble, daß sie in diesen dreizehn Jahren musikalisch gewachsen sind und auf das Acid-Jazz-Deckmäntelchen gut verzichten können. Zwar gibt es auch auf dem neuen Album noch den einen oder anderen Track - etwa den slicken Titelsong "Love & Light" -, der an die Frühzeit der Band erinnert, doch unterm Strich ist die Musik Count Basics heute einfach perfekt für Strand, Grillparty und Berlins schicke Boutiquen in MItte. Zu den Highlights gehören zweifellos das erdig groovende "Last Man On Earth", das ein wenig nach Joss Stone klingende "No Visible Scars", die funkige Shuffle-Nummer "Supa Dupa" und das leicht rockige "Get By", das wiederum an Anastacia erinnert. Legat beweist, daß er es nach wie vor versteht, eingängige Melodien mit anspruchsvollen Arrangements zu kombinieren.
